What is the difference between transferable and non-transferable?

Firearms that cannot legally be transferred from one owner to another would be non-transferable. An example would be, a non serialized firearm built from scratch, or from an 80% complete receiver by its original owner. Another example would be when discussing NFA firearms which would include machine guns, short barrels rifles and suppressors. Fully automatic firearms built before 1986 can usually be transferred through a licensed dealer from one owner to another. But fully automatic firearms built after 1986, whose serial number is not recorded on the NFA registry can NOT be transferred for private ownership in this way. All this, assuming youre in the United States.
